There are literally hundreds of Data Warehousing books on the market today. Each has it’s positive and negative points. However, we couldn’t possibly list all the excellent books on this page. We can, however, draw on our collective experience of working in this industry to draw up our list of the Best Data Warehousing Books.

The Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit, 2nd Edition
An excellent reference guide supported by case studies detailing concepts across various industries – retail, insurance, etc. I have used this book several times and have found it incredibly useful. No surprise that we see this book on the many IT desks. Required reading!

The Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit : Expert Methods for Designing, Developing, and Deploying Data Warehouses
An excellent book written by Kimball et. al. Ideally suited to those that need to plan and manage a data warehouse project through its entire lifecycle.

Mastering Data Warehouse Design: Relational and Dimensional Techniques
This book provides a thorough grounding in Data Warehouse design. Slightly different principles to the Kimball design, but useful nonetheless.

Building the Data Warehouse

The Data Warehouse ETL Toolkit: Practical Techniques for Extracting, Cleaning, Conforming, and Delivering Data
An essential guide to help you with a critical aspect of database creation – the Extract, Transform and Load coding phase. This book will help you with the design process to help ensure you lay good foundation blocks for your database implementation.

Data Warehousing: Using the Wal-Mart Model (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Data Management Systems)
This is an interesting book written by one of the architects of the Wal-Mart Data Warehouse. He describes his initial design and it’s subsequent phenomenal growth. A real eye opener and a useful guide in implementing warehouses. It is an older book now, but provides great insights into the creation of large databases.

Learning SQL: Master SQL Fundamentals
A good starter book to help you master the SQL fundamentals. This book has recently been updated for the latest database management systems including Oracle, Microsoft and MySQL.
